From Puebla (Mexico): I asked my friend to go on retreat, and he said “I’ll see“ and later, NO!!!

Two months ago, I walked into my English class for the first time at the start of a new school term. I carried that mix of excitement and curiosity – hoping to meet new people and, if I was lucky, make some good friends. As usual, I was wearing my sunglasses – the kind without prescription – on my way from home to the university. But when I walked into the classroom and took them off, everything suddenly became blurry.
I found a seat next to someone who, even through my unfocused vision, seemed very tall. When I put my glasses back on to greet him, I was able to confirm it: he was extremely tall, almost two meters. What began as a simple, random encounter slowly became the beginning of a friendship.
As the days went by, we started making simple plans – grabbing breakfast, talking after class… and little by little I realized that my friend wasn’t very close to God. I didn’t really know how to help him. Until one day, I decided to invite him to lunch at my house. He didn’t know anything about my vocation as a numerary or about the Work itself. Once we were there, I explained a bit, and almost without overthinking it, I invited him to stay for a meditation. Deep down, I was asking Pedro to make that moment a real encounter with God for him. To my surprise, he said yes.
Afterward, I drove him home, and along the way we talked about what he had experienced. I noticed again that he was somewhat distant from God. That stayed with me, so I took it to my prayer. I thought a retreat might help him, so I invited him. His response wasn’t very enthusiastic – just a simple “I’ll see.”
Even so, I began entrusting this intention to Pedro. There was still about a month before the retreat, and honestly, the circumstances didn’t seem ideal. We weren’t that close, maybe he wouldn’t be interested, maybe he’d find it boring… all kinds of excuses started forming in my head.
After a month of praying to Pedro, I asked him again if he would go. This time he clearly said No. I have to admit, I felt a bit discouraged. But I decided to keep insisting – especially in prayer. A few days later, we made plans to go out to eat, and in the middle of the conversation, I brought it up again. After a few minutes, almost without much hesitation, he said Yes.
On my way back home, I was sure Pedro had something to do with it. But I also felt encouraged to ask for more – not just that he would go to the retreat, but that he truly live it as a deep experience.
The retreat finally came… and all of that happened. He went and truly lived the retreat.
At one point during those days, we watched a documentary about Pedro. Later, I asked him what he thought about it. He told me he liked it – and that it helped him grow closer to God.
Today, I continue praying for him, entrusting him to Pedro, so that everything he experienced may bear fruit.
Pedro has taught me something very concrete: to have hope, even when things seem not to move forward. He has taught me to trust more in Jesus and to genuinely care about others and their happiness. From a human perspective, all of this may seem small, but I am convinced that these have been graces that Our Lord has granted—through Pedro.
