I facilitated a three‑day leadership camp in one of the popular rainforest campsites in the Philippines. Our campers are 12-16 years old. Hence, Pedro is their Kuya (older brother).
Two nights before our scheduled campfire, heavy rains poured, and we were worried that our most awaited activity might be cancelled.
Sensing the campers’ anticipation, I invited them to pray together using the prayer card of Pedro Ballester. I introduced Pedro as our “Camp Kuya” — kuya meaning older brother in Filipino — reminding them that Pedro himself was once a camper who lived with faith and courage.
With all 89 of us united in prayer, we walked to the bonfire site with confidence that no rain would spoil our campfire. And indeed, it happened! That night we sang, chanted, danced, roasted s’mores, and celebrated with joy.
As we finished our last song, small drops of rain began to fall. We quickly returned to our cabins, and almost as soon as we arrived, a heavy downpour came — so strong it felt like a typhoon.
We thanked Pedro for his intercession, believing that he wanted us to enjoy the campfire as much as he did in his lifetime.
